 With the first computer science undergraduate program offered in 1971, the School of Computer Science, Shandong University (SDU) is home to one of the first such programs in China. In the following year, the DJL-1 Computer was released by SDU, which ranked third across the country in terms of overall performance. DJL-1 won the Grand Prize at the National Science Congress held in 1978. The School of Computer Science took its current form following a merger of Shandong University, Shandong University of Technology, and Shandong Medical University in January 2001.  

 

The School offers accredited PhD programs in Computer Science & Technology and Software Engineering, with the following concentrations: Software and Theory, Applied Computer Science, Computer Architecture, Digital Media Technology & Arts. The School also offers Master’s programs in E-Commerce and Information Technology, and has two postdoctoral training stations in Computer Science & Technology and Software Engineering. The School emphasizes both theoretical and practical research, with research activities taking place in a variety of areas, including human computer interaction, virtual reality, software and data engineering, intelligent information processing, intelligent computing, big data management and analytics, machine learning and media analysis, information security and cryptography, computer architecture and high performance computing, and computer networks.

 

The School boasts three research centers (Center for Human Computer Interaction and Virtual Reality, Center for Software and Data Engineering, Center for Intelligent Information Processing), three research institutes (Institute of Software, Institute of Network and Information Security, Institute of Architecture and High Performance Computing), two teaching departments(Department of Computer Science and Technology, Department of E-Commerce), the Teaching Department of Computer Fundamentals, and the Computing Center . The School also houses a number of national and provincial laboratories/centers, including the National Engineering Laboratory for E-Commerce Transaction Technology, the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for Cryptography and Information Security, the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Digital Media Technology, the Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory for Software Engineering, The Shandong Provincial Laboratory for Information Security in E-Government, the Shandong Provincial Research Center for Manufacture Information Engineering, the Shandong Provincial Research Center for CIMS Technology, The Shandong Provincial Research Center for Applied Software Engineering Technology, and the Shandong Center for High Performance Computing.

 

The School currently has 160 full-time employees, including 111 full-time faculty members, of which there are 20 doctoral supervisors, 33 professors, and 57 associate professors. There are over 1,100 students currently enrolled in various programs offered by the School, including approximately 130 PhD students, 410 Master’s students, and 590 undergraduate students. In addition, there are around 370 students enrolled in part-time Master’s programs.

 

The School is committed to educating talents with a great sense of social responsibility and a strong competitive edge, and promotes the holistic development of the students. Over the years, the School has established a talent-training paradigm that can cater to the needs of the society, and has produced thousands of excellent computer science talents. Recent years have witnessed a drastic growth in the School, thanks to the superior infrastructure of the campus, an accommodating academic environment, and the support of preferential policies.

 

The School participates extensively in international collaboration, and has established close academic exchange and relationships with over 30 universities, research institutes, and multinational companies. International activities take a variety of forms at different levels, such as lecture series, research visits, faculty training, student exchange, establishing joint labs, and professional certification.

 

Building on top of SDU’s over 100 years of excellence, the School strives to continuously improve its research and teaching qualities, and is on its way to achieving the strategic objective of building a first-class research-intensive organization.
